A creative brief exists to prevent one specific conversation: the one in round three where it turns out the client wanted something nobody wrote down.
Most briefs fail at that job because they are too long to be filled in honestly. Ten fields answered properly beats forty fields answered with the word "modern". What follows is a one-page brief, a shorter version for small jobs, and two filled-in examples — because a blank template teaches nobody what a good answer looks like.
The four answers that carry the brief
Before the template, the part that decides whether it works. If a brief nails only four things, make them these.
Who is this for, specifically? Not "customers". Parents booking a summer camp, on a phone, in the week after payday. A described audience makes half the design decisions for you.
What should they do? One action. Call, scan, walk in, order. A piece asked to do three things does none.
What does success look like, and who says so? Named. The single most expensive gap in small-shop briefs is discovering at sign-off that a director nobody mentioned is the real judge.
What is fixed? Colours, logo, legal text, the size, the deadline, the fact that it must fit an existing template. Constraints are the useful part of a brief; they are also the part clients forget to mention because to them it is obvious.

Field 6 in three adjectives, not a paragraph. "Warm, plain-spoken, unfussy — not corporate." Long tone sections read well and constrain nothing.
Field 9 is two questions, and the second one is the important one. "Who approves" is usually answered confidently and often wrongly. Ask who else has to see it before the answer counts.
Field 10 names the rounds. A brief that does not say how many revisions are included is a brief that ends in a conversation about money. Ours is in the revision policy template.

For a returning client, a single asset, or anything where a full brief would be more work than the job.

Worked example 1 — a café menu reprint

Nothing there is clever. It is specific, which is the whole of what a brief has to be — and "disliked how small the prices were" will save a round on its own.
Worked example 2 — a shop-front sign
Same form, a job that gets installed rather than delivered.

The business name, and what it sells.

Recognise the shop and come in.

Confident, legible, unfashionable. Avoid: anything that
dates in two years.
7. What is fixed?
Brand navy. Wordmark as supplied. The landlord requires no
illumination and no projection past the frontage.
8. What exists already?
Two branches, photos attached. Match the newer one.
9. Success and approval
How we will judge it: legible from the far pavement.
Who approves: Dan.
Who else must see it first: THE LANDLORD'S AGENT, before
production.

The shouted line in field 9 is why that field asks two questions rather than one. On sign work the person happily approving is routinely not the last one whose agreement the job needs — and finding that out after installation is how a job gets produced twice.
Getting the brief filled in
Clients do not avoid briefs because they are lazy. They avoid them because a brief asks questions they have not decided the answers to yet.
Fill it in with them, on a call, in fifteen minutes. You typing while they talk produces a better brief than a form emailed into a busy week — and the moment they hear you read back "so nobody else has to approve this" is when they remember their business partner.
Ask what they will hate. Easier to answer than what they want, and more useful. Most people can name the thing instantly.
Write down what they said, not what you understood. Their words are what you will be measured against.
Send it back and get a yes on the brief itself. A brief nobody agreed to is notes.
What happens after the brief
The brief settles what to make. Everything after that is agreeing on what was made — and that is where small studios lose time, because the answer arrives as three emails, a screenshot and a phone call.
